By looking at in-series documents and dates presented in series it’s revealed that Serial Experiments Lain take place in the 1999 0f an alternative timeline where the Wired was developed instead of the Internet. This sequence seems to indicate that the series takes place in the modern-day, but the world of Lain does not seem to reflect our reality. There were numerous attempts by the fan community to create remixes and covers of it.

I’ve watched it a good five times and I can honestly say I still find new tidbits of the story every time. Every anime fan should see this series, but be prepared for a brain twister.
The story is deep, well thought out, and very entertaining throughout. Lain is by far one of my favorite animes of all time. No matter where you go, Lain feared, everyone’s connected. In the final scenes, Lain shows no hardware or wires, yet the worrisome murmur of electricity resounds in every corner of civilized life. Serial Experiments Lain ends with a teen girl sobbing over a madeleine, regretting her terminal investment in digital life. This, along with many other incidents in the early episodes are foreshadowing to the assumption that Lain is mentally unstable. It is in fact a fairly typical schizophrenic hallucination to perceive yourself emitting ectoplasm from your body. At one point, Lain has smoke emit from her fingers and fill the classroom.
